OXFORD CITY REGATTA

Race report from Peter Harvey ...

CONGRATULATIONS to Emily Tench & Maddie Shoolbread who won the WJ13 2x at Oxford City Regatta on Sunday.

The prelude to the decision to enter was a very fast row at Maidenhead Regatta. Although beaten they managed to row the 500m course in 2 min 2 sec which was to equal the time they achieved when winning in the 4x+ on the same day. Disappointed at Maidenhead they felt sure they could improve upon their performance in the 2x given the opportunity.

So at a sunny and hot Oxford City Regatta they were to race their first round against local favourites Hinksey Sculling School. Both crews lined up on the start and found themselves level with each other at the bend at 150m where the Staines girls drew ahead and started to pull away from the Hinskey crew. As they progressed down the course Hinksey couldn't make up the distance as the Staines girls settled into their stride and won by 2 lengths so qualifying for the final.

The final was to be Staines BC vs Reading RC, a crew we have not seen in competition so far this year. The Reading Crew was marked out by their stroke who was tall, a giant for 13 years old! The two crews lined up neatly on the start only to be told to 'stand down' as a punt had strayed out of one of the many backwaters adjoining the main stream onto the regatta course - this could only happen in Oxford! The novice 'punter' eventually made his way to the riverbank away from the racing lane. They were off! This time the Staines Crew left no room for doubt and shot off the start making half a length over Reading in the first few strokes. By the bend the Staines Crew were a length up and continued to storm down the course leaving their opposition behind and they won by a comfortable 4.5 lengths.

Well done Emily & Maddie!

The senior men raced at Reading Regatta, showing good progress on boat speed since racing last weekend at the Metrolpolitan.

The eight, racing at IM1 narrowly lost to Broxbourne by 1 length. Broxbourne went on to win the event (beating Reading RC by 2 lengths in the final). The boys were pleased with their race, but too a lot away to work on.

The four, racing in IM1 4-, had a row over in their first round which proved a good warm up and raced Sport Imperial in the semi final. They lost by 2 1/2 lengths, but again they were happy with the row and boat speed showed they had moved on significantly since last weekend.

On the Sunday, Mike Godfrey did his first race as Staines in his single, progressing to the semi final in novice singles.

The senior men were in action this weekend racing at the Metropolitan Regatta on both Saturday and Sunday.

Several crews were entered and the boys quickly found that they can push themselves harder, and are now looking forward to final training for Henley Royal Regatta early next month, and finding out how much more than can deliver.

The combinations of the eights that raced showed that the groundwork has worked well, particulary to 1k, and already learning from this, later on the Sunday we had a coxless four that progressed to the final, beating the likes of Thames along the way. They claimed a well deserved 4th place, just a length off a 3rd place finish. Well done all!

Intermediate 2 Coxless Four - Roland Skinner, Alex Broadhurst, Stuart Jones, Nick Pollen.

National Schools

03 Jun 2010
Last weekend the club sent a W.J18.2x (Heather Jones & Abi Musk) and W.J16.1x (Abi Musk) to the National Schools Regatta in Nottingham. This regatta is now arguably the toughest junior regatta in the country, with 3 days solid racing of just juniors.

The double were racing "up a status" at W.J18, and after easily moving through the field in the time trials, missed out on a place in the final by less than 2 lengths. Given some of the competitors in the field had been to Junior Worlds, this was a very credible result, and showed a strong improvement on time since January.

Abi in her single raced at W.J16 and from a field of 24 made excellent progress into the final of 6, which contained several athletes on the GB World Class Start programme, and current triallists.

Both of these results are excellent indeed, and this group moves forward to Henley Women's Regatta in just over two weeks time.

Monmouth Regatta last weekend resulted in some good wins for Staines BC:

W.NV.1x (Saturday) Helen Blamey (novice pot!)
W.NV.2x (Saturday) Helen Blamey & Cardiff University
J14.1x (Saturday) Kieran Matheson
W.J14.2x (Sunday) Molly Lock & Emily Tench
W.J15.2x (Sunday) Shannon Horan & Molly Lock
J13.1x (Sunday) Jonny Tate

That's two pots for Helen and Molly! There were many other crews through to the final, with some close finishes.

Evesham and BUCS (Brunel)

05 May 2010
The Bank Holiday weekend saw racing at Evesham and Nottingham.

Brunel were represented by men's and women's beginner fours at BUCS in Nottingham. The men's four had tough opposition, and didn't quite make it out of the large time trial, but the clubs that beat them were major universities such as Imperial. The women faired better, they qualified from the time trial into the quarter finals, and had a good race still in touch with the group but didn't process.

At Evesham, 17 athletes from the men's and junior women squad raced on the 1000m course. A good day was had, with 12 of those athletes coming home with at least one pot. The wins were in:

IM3.8+ (5 raced, bt. Magalden College (Oxford) by 1/2 length in final)
IM3.4+ (14 raced, bt. Warwick BC easily in final)
NOV.2x (5 raced, bt. Evesham RC easily in final)
W.J18.2x (4 raced, bt. Monkton Coombe RC by 4 lengths in final)

Well done all!
