A still and sunny summer morning on the peaceful River Thames at Maidenhead was the scene that greeted the Staines Boat Club crews racing in this Regatta
Kathryn & Ellie in the Women's Junior 15 double sculls were first to race against a crew from the home club. After a short battle off the start the SBC girls took charge of the race and were ahead all the way to the finish where they qualified for a place in the Final.
Next were the Masters Novice Women Coxed Quad being steered by Olivia Bennett in the Cox seat. This was a good performance from the Ladies who looked strong all the way down the course and winning through to the Final.
Last to go were Christian Uttley &
George Waters who were racing in the Intermediate 2 Pair (sweep). Christian said that they are racing in this event to 'gain experience'. It was a good experience today as the boys were in contact with the opposition as they raced down the 500metre course. Although the SBC boys lost the race it was only by about a length this time.
In the Final races, the weather was threatening to turn and out of nowhere a gusty breeze blew up. Undaunted Kathryn & Ellie took of from the start well, batting hard against the opposition from Weybridge RC. Then their opponents seemed to wobble steering off to the edge of the course. The deviation off course gave the SBC girls the lead and they opened into a stride gaining lengths over their opponents. The verdict at the finish was a win 'Easily' to Kathryn & Ellie. CONGRATULATIONS ladies a great victory.
The Masters Woman were next to Row. They started well although the wind was now becoming an issue. As they came out of the start they never really got into their stride and had to battle all the way down the course to a close finish, losing by only half a length. Nevertheless a good performance.
The Next Regatta's the Junior Squad will be racing at Gloucester & Ross on the August Bank Holiday weekend (26th, 27th & 28th August, 2017).
Sorry I have no photos of the Maidenhead Regatta today, I got so wrapped up in the races I forgot to use the Camera. Pete ( Coach)
