After weeks of rain causing all the Rivers of England to flood, closing them to traffic and cancelling many of the early Regatta’s in this year’s summer season, this weekend saw the Staines Boat Club junior squad first chance to race in competition.
The Ball Cup Regatta was held at Dorney Lake, Eton which is the host venue for the Olympic Regatta later this year. The regatta is a multi-lane competition over 750 meters with qualifying heats and a final. A small but strong team of junior women athletes from Staines Boat club put in simply fantastic performances in races throughout the day.
Georgia Conner won a gold medal in the WJ14 single event and Abigail Mason won a silver medal in the WJ13 single event. Morgaine Webb also qualified for the final of the WJ13 single event just missing the medals in fourth.
Abigail Mason and Morgaine Webb also raced with club mates Georgia Conner and Avanji Vase in the Women’s junior age 14 double sculls qualifying heats. Abigail and Georgia won their heat which was the fastest of the three qualifying events and secured there position in the final. Morgaine and Avanji narrowly missed the first place in their race taking the second place position but sadly failed to qualify for the final. In the final Abigail and Georgia came in fourth overall just outside the medal position.
The high-standard of Rowing at the Ball Cup Regatta was notable this year and coupled with the changeable conditions on the lake means that this group of Staines Boat Club girls can be very pleased with their performance – WELL DONE Abigail, Georgia, Avanji and Morgaine.

As you may be aware Staines is celebrating becoming Staines upon Thames this Sunday, SBC will have a stand in the bank oposite the club promoting rowing at SBC. If anyone has a spare few minutes to support the stand and chat to potential rowers that would be great. Specifically if anyone is able to help transport the 2 ergos across the river that would be really helpful.
In addition to this Heathrow as event partners are bringing a number of sporting legends, including Steve Williams, so there will be a chance for you meet or have your photo taken with someone who has won Olympic golds.

This month's Club Night has a special guest, Olympic gold medal winner BEN HUNT-DAVIS We would love to see as many members and supporters at this event next Friday. Ben Hunt-Davis won a GOLD medal in coxed eights at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, as a member of the British rowing team, the only British crew to have won this event since 1912. Ben also works for the British Olympic Association and was Chairman of the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships. He has co-authored an excellent book "Will It Make The Boat Go Faster?" with Harriet Beveridge and I'm sure will be happy to sign any copies you bring along! Ben will be speaking about his rowing experiences. As always the evening starts at 7pm with food served at 8pm (£5 a head).

Seven members of the Junior Squad showed that they are amongst the very best in Britain when it comes to ‘Egrometer’ or ‘ERG’ racing and training. The girls and boys of the Junior Squad took part in the ‘National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships’ of ‘NJIRC’ held at Lea Valley Athletics Centre at Picketts Lock, Tottenham Hale, North London on Friday 23rd March.
This year NJIRC saw a huge entry of 2000 junior athletes from Schools, Youth groups and Rowing clubs from all over the United Kingdom. Racing in their various age categories based upon School years, in groups of 30 at a time using the latest computer linked CONCEPT 2 Erg’s which were hooked up to a big screens showing ‘real time’ play back of the results to the hundreds of spectators and supporters. The atmosphere in the huge sports arena was highly charged as racing athletes at the ERG’s and spectators cheering on gave it their all. I am pleased to report the official and final results for ‘Team SBC’ are listed in racing order as follows.

The SBC team members put in 5 extra special coached training sessions prior to this event as well an increased personal ERG training sessions. During the Coached sessions the resulting performances were recorded so that we were able to track progress. Four of the group have produced a Personal Best result in the race on the day which is quite an achievement. WELL DONE to everyone who took part in what was a truly great overall performance.
